Choosing the child safety seat that best meets the needs of your child means digging for informtaion and shoppping carefully. You can get valuable guidance which can make the choice a bit easier by contacting safety organizations and child safety seat manufacturers.

• Find comprehensive buying guide information rating child safety seats in Consumer Reports Buying Guide. You may be able to find this publication in a local library or bookstore, or you may order it from Consumer Reports, Box 51166, Boulder CO 80323-1166. Cost is approximately $10.

• Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-800-424-9393. Ask for the free brochure,"A Shopping Guide to Child and Infant Seats."

• Request more printed safety information and tip sheets by writing to Child Safety Seats, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 7th Street S.W., NTS-13, Washington DC 20590.

• Get answers to your questions about specific child safety seats by calling Safety Belt Safe, a national traffic safety organization at 1-800-745-7233.

• Learn more about how to safely use child safety seats by contacting the National SAFE KIDS Coalition at 1-202-662-0600.

• Request a copy of "Kids and Airbags," an informational video about the dangers of placing children in the front seat of vehicles with passenger-side air bags. The video, produced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and a USAA-produced brochure called "Fasten Sense," which offers safety tips for using child safety seats, are yours free when you request them by calling USAA Policy Service at 1-800-531-8111.
